Time as Flexible as Bamboo
Time as Flexible as Bamboo
The advances in technology have blessed us with many efficient time saving devices that supposedly make our lives easier. But for many of us instead of creating more leisure time these devices have allowed us to take on more work, and we are no better off. How interrupting is it that your mobile phone beeps at you to tell you there is an urgent email from so and so.
How stressful is it that the office can contact you easily whilst you are having some down time and enjoying your holiday with your family? How burdening is it to have multiple devices reminding you of what has to be done consistently?
Do you ever go to bed at night
- with a nagging feeling that you have forgotten something;
• feeling disappointed that you did not complete all that needed to be done for the day;
• and instead of sleeping you are writing your To DO list in your mind;
• feeling exhausted and stressed;
• feeling annoyed that you did not say NO to something or someone;
• wondering why this keeps happening
Then you are not alone.
I have read and listened to heaps of information on how to manage time effectively and how to have balance in my life. And I am now convinced that the whole concept is a manmade construct that provides opportunity to create more stress and unease in our lives.
Our lives are not static, time doesn’t stand still. In fact, we are in a constant state of change and while things may be great one day, they could be disastrous the next. How can you ‘balance your life’ when you get a call in the middle of your work day saying your son jumped off the balcony at school and broke his ankle? Or when your final presentation to your biggest client is rescheduled to 6:00pm due to a delayed flight, on the night of your Anniversary?
You can’t possibly balance these things. But what you can do, is monitor them and create as much flexibility in your life as possible.
I hear you saying “well how could I have dealt with those issues?”
Simply. What if you had stored work time, and you could leave work stress free with all your attention on your son’s needs and what if you didn’t schedule the presentation day on the Anniversary date?
I don’t believe it is possible to prevent all unexpected scenarios, but imagine how much easier and stress free life would be if instances like this were reduced to an absolute minimum!
So whilst life is not static or balanced, there are many ways we can minimise the stress of our time commitments and create more flexibility and peace in our lives.
What is one change that you can make right now that will create greater flexibility and peace in your day and in your life?
